  11.           Contact with NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft was re- ì
  12. ì
  13. established tonight following a series of commands  ì
  14. ì
  15. transmitted from Earth, ordering Voyager to re-orient itself ì
  16. ì
  17. in space with its antenna pointed to Earth.
  18.  
  19.           It had been determined that loss of radio contact ì
  20. ì
  21. with the craft on Thursday was due to the spacecraft's ì
  22. ì
  23. communication antenna being pointed away from Earth.
  24.  
  25.           This occurred when an optical sensor had locked on ì
  26. ì
  27. the star Alpha Centauri instead of the star Canopus, placing ì
  28. ì
  29. the spacecraft in the wrong orientation for communication ì
  30. ì
  31. with Earth.  Why this occurred it being analyzed.
  32.  
  33.           Contact was lost following a course-correction ì
  34. ì
  35. maneuver in space, during which radio communication is  ì
  36. ì
  37. blacked out, after which the spacecraft should have assumed ì
  38. ì
  39. the proper orientation for radio communications to Earth.
  40.  
  41.           Voyager was 660 million miles from Earth when
  42.  
  43. contact was lost. 
  44.  
  45.           The craft is en-route to Saturn for a November, ì
  46. ì
  47. 1980, rendezvous and was launched in September, 1977.
  48.  
  49.           JPL manages the Voyager Mission for NASA.
